Sports Accidents while Abroad Claims

It’s important to keep safe when involved in sports such as skiing and snowboarding, but there's always an element of risk with this kind of activity.

You can try to plan for all eventualities, but accidents do happen due to the neglect of others, no matter how prepared you are. If that happens, we are here to help.

Before you travel though, do make sure your insurance is up to date and covers all activities you’ll be doing. Recent research by ABTA found that almost 10 million Brits are travelling without the appropriate insurance, yet thousands of people suffer injuries both on and off-piste.

What types of sport do you mean?

'Winter sports' are the most common causes of injury, or those classed as 'extreme sports' where, obviously, an element of risk is involved, such as:

  • Skiing
  • Snowboarding
  • Ice skating
  • Bobsleigh / skeleton
  • Snowmobiling

What can I claim for?

There are many kinds of winter sports accidents, and these are just a few example claims:

  • Faulty / damaged equipment
  • Tour operator / guide negligence
  • Other tourists causing injury
  • Injuries sustained on ski lifts

How long do I have to make a claim?

In most personal injury and accident cases claims are limited to three years, but can be as little as one year depending on the country in which the accident occurred. Get in contact with us as soon as possible to discuss your specific circumstances.

More about making a claim

How much can I claim?

When it comes to the amount you could claim for, it depends on the injury.

Hand injuries tend to receive a minimum compensation of £800, whereas fractures to fingers are usually awarded up to £4,160 for minor breaks and up to £32,210 for more severe fractures.

Serious arm fractures can be awarded at least £34,340. See our compensation calculator for more examples.

I've been injured in a sports accident, what should I do next?

Your immediate priority will be to seek treatment for any injury you have suffered.

Then there are a number of steps you can take to help support your case for compensation, including:

  • Seek medical advice as soon as possible to make sure you are treated appropriately, and to make sure your injuries are recorded.
  • Take pictures of where the incident occurred in order to document any issues, if possible.
  • Photograph any cuts, swelling or bruising caused by the incident.
  • Take the contact details of any witnesses and people involved in the accident and any relevant insurance details.
  • Make sure you report the accident to the hotel / resort, and that they document it.  Get copies if possible.

If you haven't managed to do all of the above, don’t worry, we may still be able to help.

Get in contact using our online claim form or call us using the number at the top of the screen.  You can also request a callback and we'll get in touch as the time you choose.

One of our legally qualified advisors will guide you through the entire claims process, including any No Win No Fee options for your claim.

Only pay a fee if you receive compensation

Our No Win No Fee solicitors will take a success fee from the compensation you are awarded for a successful claim in the form of a percentage of your damages. This could be up to 25% but it won't be more than that, except in cases of road traffic accidents. Changing laws mean our solicitors will now take a payment of 30% of the final compensation amount plus VAT for all road traffic accident claims.
