Bike Week kicks off, encouraging cycling across the UK

Bike Week kicks off again on 8 June 2019, aiming to get more people on their bikes.

Delivered by Cycling UK, Bike Week is an annual celebration to showcase cycling. With hundreds of events taking place across the country, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone to get involved, regardless of their cycling ability.

Each day of Bike Week focuses on a different aspect of cycling, from enjoying the social side of cycling to cycling to work.

Bike Week activitites

Cycling UK has put together some of its favourite ideas for getting into cycling for Bike Week. It’s the perfect opportunity to get together with friends and family to take part in some fun outdoor activities. If you can’t organise your own activity, the organisation has its own events page where you can find something in your area to ride along to.

If you’re new to cycling, it’s the perfect opportunity to get involved in the activity. Among the Bike Week event suggestions is a beginners’ ride, which encourages “people to take up cycling for the first time or return to cycling after an absence”.

Cycling UK advises finding “quiet roads or a park, keep the distance manageable for newcomers and make the ride enjoyable”.

For families, the organisation suggests spending some quality time together on your bikes. Think about setting up a ride in your community that’s suitable for both adults and children. You can also encourage younger riders to cycle to school, helping to persuade them to make the activity a normal part of their commute.

After you’ve taken part in all that exercise, don’t forget to take some time out to relax. Why not organise a film night, featuring a favourite bike-related movie? Or try out a cycling-centred book club. According to Cycling UK, as long as your event focuses on the activity, it can be part of Bike Week 2019.

Safety for cyclists

Bike Week is also a timely opportunity to point out how cyclists are still one of the most vulnerable users of our roads. With more than 38 million vehicles on the road at the end of 2018, according to the RAC, there are plenty of hazards around, so it’s important to consider the best ways to keep yourself safe on your bike.
