Undiagnosed gum disease, such as gingivitis, can develop into serious and painful periodontal disease. It’s important that your dentist monitors the health of your gums as well as your teeth.

What is periodontal disease?

"Perio" means around and "dontal" refers to teeth. Periodontal diseases – also referred to as periodontitis – are infections of the structures around the teeth, caused by the bacteria in dental plaque.

Gingivitis – a gum infection – can be an early stage of periodontal disease. More advanced forms of the disease can affect surrounding tissues, ligament and bone. Teeth can become loose and may fall out.

There is no cure for periodontal disease, but early intervention can help prevent it from developing further.

Why make a claim for dental negligence?

If you’ve received sub-standard dentistry, making a claim not only raises awareness of the problem, it also means you have financial acknowledgement of your suffering.

More about making a claim

Periodontal negligence could include:

  • Conditions undiagnosed and untreated
  • Conditions not referred
  • Lack of suitable advice and guidance

How can First4Lawyers help?

Get in contact with us and tell us what has happened. We can then look at your individual case and advise you whether you have a claim. We offer a free consultation with no obligation to proceed with anything.

If you do have a claim, we will also explain our No Win No Fee* service (not applicable in Scotland or Northern Ireland for medical negligence), which means you won’t have to pay any costs upfront.

How much compensation will I receive?

That very much depends on the level of dental negligence and how it has affected you.

Our compensation calculator gives an idea of the amounts you could be awarded, but a chat with our advisors will give you advice tailored to your individual circumstances.

Is there a time limit for making a claim?

You usually have three years in which to make a claim from the date the negligence occurred, or you became aware of it.

I think I have a claim, what do I do next?

Get in touch with us for a free consultation. You can call us or request a callback to tell us when to call you.

We’ll ask you about your situation and go through your options with you. No fuss, no pressure – just a conversation.
